My
name is Brett Homann, I hold the rank of Rokudan (6th) in
Ryu Kyu Kempo and Nidan (2nd) in Soryu Karate Do. My journey
started with my father, who is also my instructor. He introduced
karate to me at the age of four and I have consistently trained
with him for the past 27 years. I have also trained with George
Dillman since 1984.
*At age 15, I was recognized in karate when I began participating
in tournaments. The first tournament I competed in, I won
the state title in Hammond, Indiana.
*At age 16, I competed at the USA Karate Federation Nationals
in Akron, Ohio where I placed third in the nation. This tournament
placed me on the USA Jr. Karate Team. When I was on the USA
Jr. Karate Team, I was chosen to represent my country in Japan.
I was there for a month training and competing with all the
elite schools. I successfully returned home with a first and
second in team kumite, a third in individual competition,
and finished with a 12 - 3 record.
*At age 17, my goal was to be on the USA Adult Karate Team.
I reached my goal when I won state and placed second at regional's
in Ohio which then, qualified me for nationals in Las Vegas.
At Las Vegas, I placed fifth in the nation in the 22 - 34
year old black belt division, which qualified me a spot on
the USA adult Karate Team. I was one of twenty-six chosen
to be the first karate practitioner to train at the Olympic
Training Center in Colorado Springs. I was also one of ten
who was picked to test the standards of Olympic karate athletes.
It consisted of four workouts a day four work outs a day for
a full week training with USA's elite athletes and coaches.
*At age 18, I was asked to compete in Cost Rica, which consisted
of fifteen different countries at the Caribbean Championships.
Competing in Costa Rica was one of the greatest moments in
my life, which I will remember and cherish for the rest of
my life. I left undefeated, by winning a first in the 75 kilo
division, first in the open division, and a second in team
kumite. In the same year, I competed at the USA World Cup
Team trials in Columbus, Ohio and I finished fifth in the
country.
*At
age 19, I achieved my second goal, which was to be ranked
number one in the country. I accomplished that goal by winning
the USA Karate Federation Nationals in Columbus, Ohio. At
the time, I was the youngest karate athlete to win nationals.
By winning nationals, it qualified me for the Pan American
Championships in Brazil where I placed fifth in the individual
kumite and fifth in the team kumite.
*At age 20, I competed in the Pan American Championships in
Carazol where I placed fifth in the individual kumite and
forth in the team kumite.
*At age 21, I competed in Dominica Republic where I won first
and came home undefeated. At age 22, I decided to challenge
myself by competing in a higher weight division. I placed
second in the nation at the USA World Cup team trials where
I fought in the 85-kilo division. In the same year, the Greek
National Karate Team came to America to compete against the
USA Karate Team at Springfield, Illinois. The USA Karate Team
won and I was given the honor of Most Valuable Person (M.V.P).
There are also several local tournaments, state, and regional
titles that I won throughout my life that were not mentioned.
*I have been featured in several karate magazines such as
Black Belt, Inside Kung Fu, American Karate, and a cover story
in Karate Profiles. I have been recognized for my dedication,
contribution, and love of the art by three different black
belt hall of fame’s: Action Martial Art’s Magazine
Hall of Fame, World Karate Union Hall of Fame, and Universal
Martial Arts Association Hall of Fame. At the present time,
I have committed myself to my students and their excellence,
by opening a state of the art facility (Homann Karate Do)
in Crown Point, Indiana. I have brought in elite martial artists
from around the world to conduct seminars and tournaments
at my dojo. I have been fortunate to train with elite martial
artists and I want my students to have that same opportunity
as well. In the six years Homann Karate Do has been open we
have been able to achieve countless national titles and numerous
second and third places; continuing our school's motto "
tradition of champions". I have also worked with the
community, local schools, Boys and Girls Scout, local police,
parades, and kick-a-thons. I truly enjoy the opportunity to
share my passion of Karate Do to my students, wishing them
the same success and happiness I have received throughout
my life in karate.
